Week of 4/21/13

I will not be posting a sermon this week. My friend Don Foster is preaching. I will pose two questions to see who might be reading and open them to comment and discussion.
1) What does the recent events in Boston tell us about evil in the world?
2) In light of Jesus comment to give unto Caesar what is Caesar's, how does an affirmative Same-Sex Marriage ruling from the Supreme Court change the way we behave as Christians in America?

  1. 1. I changed my message to evil. We came to the conclusion in the congregation that "rendering evil for evil" is counterproductive. I read from Dr. R.C. Sproul's article "The Mystery of Evil." My overall conclusion to Dr. Sproul's conclusion that "evil is not good" but the presence of evil must be good because God allows it is - evil exists and is the fertile soil in which good and right and love grow and produce fruit.
As for same sex marriage, I again argue that it is a matter of the state who issues the licenses to marry and officiate. The church will need to decide whether to bless the unions or not, but the marriage will be legal due to the manner in which the licenses are issued. If the state permits the union, the church may as well bless them as we would baptize them and serve them communion.
